Our topic in Autumn 1 was ‘Day and Night’ so we became scientists and investigated lots of tricky questions about light and dark.
Do plants need light to grow?
We put two plants on the window sill in the light and hid two plants in the cupboard in the dark. Look at our results to see what happened!
Do shadows change length and direction?
We put a stick in a pot of sand and measured its shadow over the morning. It got shorter and it changed direction.
Does light travel in a straight line?
We cut holes in card and used a torch to see if light travels in a straight line. We had fun doing this!
Painting in the Daylight and in the Dark!
We painted the scene from our outdoor classroom in the daytime, and then our parents helped us paint the same scene at night. We had learnt all about changing the shade and tone of colours.

Listening to Music Describing the Day and the Night
We listened to Grieg’s music called ‘Morning’ and to Beethoven’s ‘Moonlight Sonata.’ We drew pictures of the images the music had created in our minds.

Composing our own Music Describing Dawn to Dusk
We used percussion instruments to create music describing the beginning of the day through to the twinkling stars at night.
